How to become a Neuroethologist

Becoming a neuroethologist typically requires a combination of education, training, and practical experience in neuroscience, biology, and behavior. Here is an overview of the pathway to the career:

High School Diploma or Equivalent
Earn a high school diploma or equivalent. High school education provides a foundation in basic communication and math and organizational skills, and it lays the groundwork for further learning.

Bachelor's Degree
Pursue a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as biology, zoology, psychology, neuroscience, ecology, animal sciences, wildlife science and management, or another related discipline. During undergraduate studies, take courses that provide a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and statistics. Ensure that coursework related to animal behavior, neurobiology, and research methods is also a part of your chosen curriculum.

Graduate Education
Neuroethologists typically hold a master’s or doctoral degree in neuroscience, biology, psychology, ethology, or a related field. Aspiring neuroethologists should look for graduate programs with a strong emphasis on behavioral neuroscience, neuroethology, or comparative neurobiology.

Research / Teaching Experience
